Mysterious Disappearance of Hangers

I love this piece of art by Paul Smith. In my daily life I find that I have way too many clothes to fit in my closets and with constant dry cleaning there's always a stray hanger lingering in my home, just hanging out on my bed or couch or desk chair. What's it doing out if my closet? Yet sometimes when I'm in need if a hanger there's none to be found. I'm blaming it on Paul!

A Beer Gaarten

Last Friday was walky talky time with my friend Tina. We headed south east from 5th Ave. in midtown and did our usually catching up while we walked and observed our changing surroundings from block to block.

I have walked down 3rd avenue a dozen times before and for some reason always forgot that Rolf's German Bar  Restaurant was here. Maybe because it was always dark when I'd walked this way in the past, I'm not sure. Anyway it was about 7pm and still daylight when Tina stopped in mid sentence and pointed to the window of this place. Me, being pretty much blind without my glasses only saw the big branch in the window display and thought "hhhm how nice, there's a tree branch in the window!" She kept saying, "Cool, look!" I got up real close to the window, looked inside and saw what she saw. The entire interior of the place was adorned with trees, branches, a cornucopia of greenery, stained glass lamps and some posts that mimicked signs with the names of the streets. "Aaaah, Ooh, I see!" There were less than 7 people in the bar but the interior beckoned us, so we went in.

Curiosity was what brought us here. I only realized it was Rolf's when the bartender handed us the beer list and I caught the name of the establishment on the top. This place has seen it's better days. It's been around for years and had gained the reputation of having good service, good food and a great festive Christmas and Holiday spirit. Today however, it was a bit slow. The menu sported all sorts of German brews, pilsners and hefeweissen. The decor is awesomely over the top, makes you feel like you're still outside.

I had a glass of already opened savignon blanc and Tina had a glass of red wine. Neither of us were in the beer mood. We also decided to have dinner there. The food menu of course had all sorts of German old world goodies and some new items. We did a prixe fixe of $19.99 which included our glass of wine, salad and entree. I chose the saurbraten, mashed potatoes and cabbage, while Tina chose the Tilapia with potatoes, we each had a house salad. I'll say this much, the food was so so. It wasn't aweful but I expected more. Lore has it that Rolf's has changed in the past 2 years. The tastiest thing on my plate was the cabbage which was surprisingly packed with flavor. Oh well! I still had a great time hanging with my friend and the environment was interesting. The crowd started to pick up after 8pm. Lore also has it that they make a great sausage and wiener shnitzel, maybe we can try that next. andmaybe next time we'll order a German beer to go with the sausage.

If anything Rolf's is worth a visit at least for a drink and the decor. It's still a good local establishment.

Hang On, Here's Some Art For You

Hangeliers by Organelle Design in Vancouver, BC

Bowl? by Nadega

Neck Collar: Frederike Top (product designer)

What do all of these things have in common? They are all made from hangers. Some from wood, some from plastic and some from wire hangers. Sculpture, Industrial Design, Product Design. All are beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to me, not to mention fascinating to look at! It does beg the question, "What's in your closet?" Hope you enjoy them too and get inspired to do something artistic with something you would otherwise just throw out.

A Gem Of A Shop

I'm very excited to announce the opening of a new shop on Etsy, called JZinn's shop, http://www.etsy.com/shop/JZinn . Jennifer Zinn, the proprietor of the shop features her one of a kind handmade crafts. I've known Jennifer for years and can attest her great skills as a jewelry maker, photographer and craftsperson.

The first items featured are woven necklaces consisting of multi-colored cotton threads. Each necklace is handwoven and highlights vintage brass frontal components that slide along the woven cord. The brass parts have been hand polished but still have a slight patina. The back of the necklaces are adorned with brass endcaps and lobster closure with "J.Zinn" hangtag. These items make for great springtime accents to your wardrobe that are both light and fun!

Be sure to check her shop often as she will be adding new items from time to time. You can also visit her blog at  http://gemmifer-jennifer.blogspot.com/ and check out her photographs and musings.

Gun Jewelry on the B-Side

Pictured above: Colt Spring Plug unisex Necklace, $225

How do you keep guns off the streets? One way is through NYC's "Gun Buy-Back Program" in which the D.A.'s office and NYPD partner with local churches to offer $200 debit cards to anyone who turns in a working firearm at one of their day events. If you consider how many innocent people including kids get shot even by accident each day in the tri-state then this is a good program. It's meant to target higher crime areas of New York like the Bronx for one. There are now about 5700 guns collected to date through the Gun Buy-Back Program which was started in 2008.

Artists Ken Leung & Dana Chin of Ken & Dana Design have decided to use gun parts to create jewelry as a means of reforming the violent association of guns to something that represents non-violence.

"B-Side" is Ken & Dana's "Gun Reclamation Project" in which they source parts from gun manufacturers and transforms the parts into jewelry. Not only is the jewelry cool but it supports a good cause. For each piece sold from this collection a contribution will be made to NYC's Gun Buy-Back Program. A great compensation to society and also a great piece of urban wear all at once.

Alternative Digs in Manhattan

If you've plan a stay in NYC but find that the cost of hotels is just ridiculous or you'd prefer to stay in a location that's less congested and touristy, then there is an alternative. OffSoho Suites are boutique style suites that are more modern than the bed and breakfast, less expensive than the chain hotels and larger than the average hotel room. They are located at 11 Rivington Street in New York's trendy lower east side and within walking distance to many popular NYC attractions and public transportation. It's great for budget conscious tavelers who would rather spend their cash on shopping, site-seeing and entertainment than on an overpriced hotel room.

Check it out here:  http://www.offsoho.com/
